CHENNAI: The city received an intense spell of rain on Sunday night, leaving several streets inundated in less than two hours. Nungambakkam received around 30 mm rain while Meenambakkam received 3mm.

An upper air circulation caused the steady spell of rain which started only as a drizzle by 8pm, but later developed into heavy showers late into the night.

A Met department forecast showed that the city may receive another spell of showers on Monday.

Private weather bloggers said that the rain on Sunday could be a signal that more thunderstorms were likely to occur in the coming days. Weather models showed winds changing to westerlies, which in turn led to the thunderstorms across the city.
