HC’s tax bench aims to dispose of 1,000 cases

Chennai: Two judges of the Madras high court handling tax portfolio have set themselves a target to dispose of at least 1,000 cases by the month-end. A division bench of Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq will publish an advance cause list to achieve the target.
The list would touch upon issues such as maintainability of appeal under Central Excise Act, levy of Service Tax on the copyrights, seigniorage charges under the GST Act on royalty matters, notice under Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax Act levying tax at 14.5% in respect of branded food, as against the claim of 2%, levy of demurrage and detention charges in respect of imported goods, levy of luxury tax on the timeshare members of the holiday resorts / clubs, and clearance of used digital and multi-functioning devices for want of compliance of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
