HC tells Tamil Nadu govt to notify retired staff of rules for new pension

Chennai: Four retired state govt employees have approached Madras high court seeking a direction to state govt to formulate and notify necessary rules to implement the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) announced in Jan. Admitting the plea on Friday, Justice P T Asha directed the govt to respond to the plea in eight weeks and adjourned the hearing.According to petitioners—R Nandagopal, M Kumar, N Punniyamoorthy and R Lakshmi Narayanan—they were appointed in the govt service after April 1, 2003, the cut-off date for the old pension scheme, and thereby were governed under the Contributory Pension Scheme.All four retired from service prior to the date of implementation of TAPS with effect from Jan 1, 2026, and accordingly were entitled for a special compassionate pension proportionate to the length of service rendered as per the govt order dated Jan 9, 2026. They claimed that they have been commonly aggrieved against non-implementation of TAPS in the absence of framing rules and operational guidelines notified by the govt.
