CHENNAI: The MS Swaminathan Environment Protection Award was conferred on R Seshasayee, executive vice-chairman of Ashok Leyland Ltd, on Saturday.
The award, presented by the Rotary Club of Madras to mark the birthday of environmental scientist MS Swaminathan on August 7, recognises efforts of individuals towards protecting the environment. Speaking on the occasion, M S Swaminathan said the award should represent the message of sustainable development.
“Usually, increase in green house gases is attributed to the automobile industry. Mr Seshasayee’s life is as an exception,” he said. The Ashok Leyland unit in Ennore has 10% of its area under green cover and redeems 1.28 million litres of water from sewage every day. The canteen at the company’s Hosur factory runs on solar heaters and waste food becomes fodder for cattle.
