After more than four decades, the Dhananjayans’ Bharata Kalanjali Natya school will unveil ‘Sangeethotsavam’, its Margazhi arts festival.“We started holding our festival in the 1970s and continued for 10 years, but couldn’t keep it going,” says maestro V P Dhananjayan.

Their school, Bharata Kalanjali, which moved to The Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu campus, has two auditoriums that c an house close to 1,000. “The performances will also benefit the Spastic Society,” he says. On December 29, the students of Bharata Kalanjali, will showcase performances and on December 30, a unique panel of granite sculptures based on the ‘Nava Karanas’, will be unveiled by the governor of Tamil Nadu. “These are not a representation of the 108 karanas or basic movements of Bharat anatyam as described in the Natya Shastra, but new karanas evolved in the present-day practice of Nritta,” says Dhananjayan.“This is my dream project and I see it becoming an inspiration to you ngsters and useful for the future generation,” says Dhananjayan.
