CHENNAI: In August next year, Goethe-Institut Chennai will celebrate its 60th year, and in its attempt to make it a memorable celebration, the centre has given film buffs in the city an offer they can't refuse.
Institute director Helmut Schippert has curated a special series called “60 German Filmabends 1960-2020. As many as 60 German films will be screened in a year.
The lineup includes films by renowned directors like Frank Beyer, Konrad Wolf, Alexander Kluge, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Margarethe von Trotta, Werner Herzog, Volker Schlöndorff, Wim Wendersand and many others.
The screenings will take place on every Friday and certain Saturdays through the year in 2020.
The screenings will begin on January 3 with 'Nackt unter Wölfen' / 'Naked among Wolves', directed by Frank Beyer, which tells the story of organised resistance in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
It will be followed by 'Karbid und Sauerampfer' / 'Carbide and Sorrel', also by Frank Beyer. It follows a man Karl Blucher, as he sets out from Dresden for Wittenberge to try to procure carbide, which is desperately needed for re-starting production in a destroyed cigarette factory.
The films will be screened at the Goethe Institut auditorium every week from January 3 to December 27, 2020. For more details, go to www.goethe.de/chennai
