Godrej Consumer Products greenfield plant opened near Chennai
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated Godrej Consumer Products’ (GCPL) first integrated greenfield plant on the OMR in Chengalpet. The Rs 515crore facility in OneHub Chennai Park will manufacture a range of products, including soaps, hair colours, electric mosquito repellents and air fresheners.
In his address, Stalin said GCPL joins the list of several FMCG companies, including Britannia, Dabur and ITC, with production projects in the state.
“The foundation stone for the facility was laid during the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Jan 2024, just five months after signing the MoU in Aug 2023. Within a year's time, the plant has been inaugurated. This is a classic example of how our govt executes a project diligently after signing an MoU," he said.
Noting that the market for consumer products in Tamil Nadu has huge potential for growth, he said the sector is competitive, which will increase in the future. With Tamil Nadu being the one of the most urbanised states in the country, it continues to be an important market for several companies.
“We are making strenuous efforts to reduce imports and enhance domestic production. Tamil Nadu, which is the gateway for investments in India, is also the best state for investments in southeast Asia," Stalin said.
The chief minister lauded the initiative of reserving jobs for 50% of women and representation for people with disabilities and transgender communities in the facility.
State industries minister TRB Rajaa said the facility would make products for India and the globe. "This is an advanced manufacturing facility focusing on sustainability. It will be a lighthouse factory using Industry 4.0 techniques," he added.
Nadir Godrej, chairperson, Godrej Industries Group, said while employment opportunities have been provided for 500 people, another 500 are in the pipeline.
Sudhir Sitapati, MD & CEO of GCPL, said the Chengalpet plant targets a revenue of Rs 2,000 crore over the next 12-15 months.
