CHENNAI: The German national, who complained she was sexually assaulted by a youth on a Mangalore-Chennai train, on January 11 has been asked to appear before the investigation officer on Friday.
The 18-year-old, who is now staying at a friend’s house in Mamallapuram, will then undergo a medical examination at the Government General Hospital.
After the girl lodged a complaint with inspector-general of police (railways) Seema Agarwal, saying she was sexually assaulted by a co-passenger on the Mangalore-Chennai mail on January 11, police registered a case of rape and arrested the passenger, 22-year-old N Chandan Kumar of Nawada in Bihar.
The case has been assigned to a woman police inspector. The girl’s statement and that of the accused have been taken.
The girl, who teaches at a private school in Karnataka, will be produced before a magistrate court in Egmore before being sent for a medical examination.
Police said the German girl, a volunteer with American Field Service, an NGO, in her country, came to India in August 2013 and was assigned to teach English at the Karnataka school for a year. After the course, she will return home.
On January 11, the girl an RAC (reservation against cancellation) ticket and had to share a berth with Kumar, whose berth was also not confirmed. She complained that she was assaulted between midnight and 1am.
Police said Kumar, a carpenter at a furniture showroom in Kovur near Kundrathur, had gone to Mangalore to fix furniture at a private college there.
