Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Friday retrieved a 13,293 square feet drama theatre in Royapuram that was encroached by private entities.
HR and CE minister P K Sekar Babu, who inspected the area, said the theatre has historical significance as it served as a foundation to propagate Dravidian ideologies in those days.
“Former chief ministers Anna, 'Kalaignar' Karunanidhi, M G Ramachandran, and late actor M R Radha used this theatre for performances and speeches. This theatre was lost to encroachments.”
Sekar Babu, who represents Harbour constituency, said the government will see how to revive the theatre and generate revenue for the civic body. The minister said the corporation has also removed several encroachments in Angappan Nayakkar Street. “This land will be used to expand a corporation middle school where 487 students are studying," the minister.
The corporation is carrying out simultaneous drives across the city to retrieve its land from encroachments.
