CHENNAI: The Chennai city police arrested four members of a gang that had stolen
silk saris
from some textile showrooms here and in Salem. The police were searching for one more member of the gang who was absconding.
The police arrested the gang members, including three women, while they were travelling in a car. They were intercepted near Padi flyover during a vehicle check.
The police identified them since the crime wing police had circulated their photographs, taken from CCTV footages recorded in some showroom from where they had stolen saris.
The arrested gang members have been identified as Kanaga Durga, 60, Balu Mahendra, 40, Nagamani, 35, and Mena, 19. The police seized their car.
The gang members were involved in a theft in a showroom at Anna Nagar here in 2018. They stole silk
saris
worth Rs 7 lakh from there.
They stole silk saris worth Rs 5 lakh from a shop in Alwarpet in January. They targeted a showroom in Ashok Nagar on February 14 and stole saris worth Rs 1.5 lakh. They had also stolen saris worth Rs 8 lakh from a showroom at Thirumangalam, police said.
