VILLUPURAM: Four members of a family were crushed to death when the auto in which they were travelling was hit by a speeding lorry near Villupuram town on Sunday.

Police said K Gurumoorthy, 50, an auto driver from Chennai, his sister-in-law K Manjula, brother-in-law Kumaraguru and nephew K Vijayan were returning to Chennai after visiting a temple in Villupuram district when a speeding blue metal-laden lorry hit the auto. The four were crushed to death on the spot. The lorry turned turtle after hitting the auto.

A team from the Roshanai police station along with a highway patrolling team reached the spot and recovered the bodies. They sent the bodies to the Villupuram government general hospital for postmortem.

The teams rescued the lorry driver identified as T Daksnamoorthy, 50, who was injured in the accident and admitted him to the Villupuram GH for treatment.
