Former teacher moves Madras HC, seeks pension for Dec 2025 retirees

Chennai: A retired teacher moved Madras high court seeking a direction to the state govt to extend benefits of the Tamil Nadu assured pension scheme (TAPS) to govt servants who retired in Dec 2025. Currently, the scheme is applicable only to govt employees who are in service as of Jan 2026.Admitting the plea moved by Renuka Devi, who took voluntary retirement in Dec 2025, Justice P T Asha directed Tamil Nadu govt to file its response by March 26.
According to the petitioner, she worked as a teacher in a govt-aided school and took voluntary retirement in Dec 2025. She submitted that the state govt announced that the pension scheme would come into effect from Jan 2026. As a result, govt employees who retired before Dec 31, 2025 would not be able to receive the pension benefits under the new scheme and would be adversely affected, she said."Govt employees who contributed under contributory pension scheme (CPS) also have the right to receive pension benefits, and denying them such benefits would be unjust. Pension under the new scheme should be provided to employees without considering the date of their retirement," she said. She wanted the court to direct the state to grant her a monthly pension of 8,430 along with dearness allowance.
