KARUR: A Karur court on Monday awarded five years imprisonment to a former commercial inspector of Tangedco in connection with a bribery case.

The chief judicial magistrate court of Karur convicted Periyasamy for demanding and accepting 1,000 from R Muthukrishnan of Lakshmananpatti for providing electricity connection to his agriculture field in 2010.

A statement from the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) stated that Muthukrishnan applied for agriculture electricity connection under self-financing scheme and paid 10,000 as fee on October 31, 2008.

In order to process the application, Periyasamy demanded 1,000 from Muthurkrishnan on March 25, 2010. Unwilling to bribe him, Muthukrishnan lodged a complaint with DVAC, Karur. The team laid a trap and caught him red-handed while receiving the bribe on March 26, 2010.

Periyasamy was sentenced to undergo three years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and pay a fine of 10,000. In case of failure to pay the fine, he should be in jail for one more year of rigorous imprisonment.

The judge also awarded two more years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and imposed a fine of 10,000 failing which he should undergo six more months of rigorous imprisonment. The judge ordered both the sentences to run concurrently.
