MADURAI: In yet another murder in the name of honour, a 43-year-old man allegedly poured poison into his teenage daughter's mouth, suspecting that she was in love with a youth, near Srivilliputhur in southern Tamil Nadu.
The man, Seetharaman, was arrested on Tuesday. Investigating officer and Srivilliputhur police inspector S Muthukumar told TOI that Seetharaman, a cook, had confessed to poisoning his daughter, Rajanilatha (14), as he believed she would bring a bad name to the family.
According 'Evidence', an NGO which went on a fact-finding mission to Tiruvannamalai village where the killing took place, Rajanilatha was studying in class IX at the Thirugnanasambandar Higher Secondary School.
After seeing some love poems in her notebook, Rajanilatha's class teacher had summoned Seetharaman and complained about his daughter.
The classsteacher of Rajanilatha, who died on Tuesday, had admonished her on September 7.
Seetharaman, suspecting that she was in love with a youth named Murugan, allegedly assaulted the girl brutally. He allegedly forced some poison into Rajanilatha's mouth. Her younger brother and sister found Rajanilatha in an unconscious state when they came back from school and informed their neighbour. The neighbour told the police that he had been threatened earlier by Seetharaman and warned against helping her. Rajanilatha died after being admitted to the Srivilliputtur government hospital.
The police said she had given a dying declaration against her father, following which a case of murder was registered against Seetharaman.
