CHENNAI: The animal husbandry department has administered

foot and mouth disease

vaccine to over 93.68 lakh cattle heads in Tamil Nadu.

This is the 10th round of vaccination for foot and mouth disease. The vaccination is being done in coordination with all the four southern states.

A senior animal husbandry department officer told TOI that vaccination began on March 1 and would end on March 31. Till Wednesday, 99.98% cattle were covered.

The state has 32 districts, and each district has a cattle population of 4.46 lakh, according to officials.

Foot and mouth disease is a severe and highly contagious viral disease that attacks cattle. This disease can easily spread from the infected animals through aerosols. A sore forms on the foot and in the mouth of the cattle, due to which they find it difficult to eat the food normally. This will make them weak.
