Chennai: A crash-landing of an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft at Pune airport late on Friday night triggered widespread disruption to flight services from Chennai airport, leading to diversions, cancellations and chaos among passengers.
An Air India Express flight that departed Chennai at 10.05pm with 162 passengers on board was unable to land in Pune and was diverted to Mumbai airport. Another IndiGo flight, which took off from Chennai at 10.30pm carrying 148 passengers, was forced to return to Chennai after receiving information about the runway closure.
The disruption extended into Saturday, with multiple early-morning departures from Chennai to Pune cancelled. IndiGo flights scheduled at 1.10am, 3.10am and 4.50am were called off, while a SpiceJet service slated for 5.20am was also cancelled. In total, around 11 services on the Chennai-Pune-Chennai sector were affected.
