CHENNAI: Doctors at the Stanley Government Hospital have confirmed that the fisherman, whose body was found on January 14 on the shore near the Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, was strangled before being pushed into the sea.
On Saturday, a woman Indira identified the deceased as her husband Vadivel. The couple lived in a house in Kasi Puram, Kasimedu.
"The body has a rope mark around the neck.
It is clear the man was killed before being thrown into the sea. We will alter the case to Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code after getting the doctor's report on Monday," a senior police officer said.
According to Indira, Vadivel left for fishing early on January 13. When he did not return the next day, she lodged a complaint at Kasimedu Police Station. Later that day, the Kasimedu Fishing Harbour Police found a man's body. The body was sent to the Stanley Government Hospital for autopsy.
Kasimedu police have launched a hunt for the accused. "We have got some vital clues and will soon nab the accused," a senior police officer said.
