CHENNAI: AR Rahman's father RK Sekhar may not have been there to see his son receive two Oscars, but his friends MC Punnose and MK Arjunan, who have known the maestro since he was a boy, are ecstatic. Dada Saheb Phalke award-winner from Malayalam cinema MC Punnose, better known as Navodaya Appachan, refers to the musician as "little Dilip". The 85-year-old veteran filmmaker remembers the tiny, curly-haired five-year-old running around the recording studios.
"He was the darling of all the artistes. As the son of the music composer, he used enjoy lot of freedom at our studios," says Appachan, who experimented with new techniques and gave the country its first 3-D film My Dear Kuttichathan'. Sekhar was a well known composer in the Malayalam film industry and was associated with Appachan for over 15 years. "He showed the traits of a musical genius back then. Little Dilip, as Rahman was known then, showed interest in all the musical instruments. He would ask questions and try to learn from them," he adds.In the late 1980s, Rahman worked with Appachan on the TV serial Bible ki kahaniyaan' for over 25 episodes. "I have seen Rahman only twice or thrice after he became a famous musician, at airports or at some functions," he says.Malayalam composer MK Arjunan, or Arjunan Master as he is better known, says he has been associated with the family since 1968. "I remember Rahman as a boy of 11. Sekhar used to play for me and we became friends. I hired the young Dilip to play the keyboards for one of my movies too," says Arjunan Master, who adds that he last met Rahman a year ago at a function in Thiruvananthapuram.
