Phase-2 Stretch Nears Opening
Chennai Metro's Phase 2 Railway line between Porur and Poonamallee is expected to be ready for use by the end of January after failing to meet the Dec 2020 deadline for completion.
Parallel Progress on MRTS Extension
Additionally, the MRTS extension from Velachery to St Thomas Mount has been pending for many years and is also nearing completion. Both of these lines are expected to be ready for inspection at about the same time and to start service shortly after.
CRS Inspection Awaited
Both the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd and Southern Railway officials have indicated that both MRTS and Chennai Metro will receive their Railway Safety Inspector's inspection at the same time as they receive their Railway Clearance Certificates. Both Railways must obtain clearance prior to starting service.
Improved Citywide Links
New rail line will connect many areas of the city with an overall rail network
When put into service, the 4.5 km MRTS line will provide connections between Tiruvanmiyur, St Thomas Mount and surrounding areas, and the Metro Phase 1 line.
Faster Travel Between Poonamallee and Porur
Travel time between Poonamallee and Porur will be reduced significantly
Once the new Metro section is fully operational, it will cut the travel time between Porur and Poonamallee to about 10 minutes, and make it easier to navigate congested roadways.
Train Frequency and Capacity
Service on the new Metro line will begin with a frequency of 6 minutes between each train. The initial Metro rolling stock will consist of 3 cars
Rolling Stock Ready
Seventeen sets of train units are ready to provide services along the Poonamallee to Porur corridor. The corridor will also be extended to Kodambakkam in future phases.
Interim Speed Certification
The Research Design and Standards Organization has issued an interim speed certification for the Poonamallee to Porur section that allows the next phase of safety assessments to proceed.
