VELLORE: The Vaniyambadi town police on Friday registered a case against a person for posting ‘malicious and false content’ about DMK leader M Karunanidhi on social media.
The police have registered the case under sections 504 and 505 (1) (a) of the IPC read with 68 and 72 of the Information Technology Act 2000 based on a complaint filed by district coordinator of DMK Advocates’ Wing A C Devakumar.

Devakumar said a person having the Facebook account name Amma Singam Savitha Vellore posted a message which said DMK leader M Karunanidhi had died. The person posted the content at 1.16pm on September 3.
“We saw the post this morning (Friday) and immediately approached the Vaniyambadi police to lodge a case against the FB account holder for spreading rumour with malicious intent,” said Devakumar.
He added that the police should identify the rumour monger at the earliest and take suitable action.
DMK MLA Nandha Kumar also filed a complaint with the Vellore district police in this regard.
Devakumar claimed that the FB user had deleted the page after the party filed a police complaint. (TOI has a copy of the FIR and the screenshot of the controversial post on Facebook.)
It may be recalled that the Tamil Nadu police have filed more than 50 cases against people for spreading rumours about chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s health condition.
