CHENNAI: The features of
autism were first described 80 years ago by two clinician-scientists

, an Austrian-American psychiatrist cum social activist, and Johann 'Hans' Friedrich Karl Asperger, an Austrian paediatrician.
They brought out the features of autistic children in their writings, stressing their description contributed towards the diagnosis of
autism spectrum
disorder - which led to the need of special educators and inclusion of these children in schools.
"Unfortunately, we lack adequate educators who can work with children with autism and other disabilities," said Ennapadam S Krishnamoorthy, founder and CEO, Buddhi Clinic. He was addressing the gathering at a discussion, '
Think Different
', held on the occasion of World Autism Day on Sunday.
"Dealing with autism requires a different mindset, that has to be approached conceptually. Our school system is very focused on intelligent people, rote learning, but today it is important to understand that everyone is intelligent in one way or the other. Children with autism have various forms of intelligence, like musical or linguistic or spatial," Krishnamoorthy said.
He urged educators to focus on what these children can do as opposed to what they must.
Vivek Misra, a neuroscientist at Buddhi Clinic, explained how they modulated behavioural outcome in autism by
neurostimulation
. "The brain structures in people with autism are not well-formed, and the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a therapy we use for children with autism to regulate their mood and other behavioural patterns," he said.
