CHENNAI: A former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, who had held the post of protector of emigrants (PoE), has been found guilty of corruption and for accepting bribes from recruitment agents. He was sentenced to imprisonment for seven years.
The IRS officer, R Sekar, was charged with accepting bribes from agents to clear emigration certificates between 2007 and 2009 when he was protector of emigrants.
The special court for CBI case, which convicted Sekar, also sentenced his aide
Anwar Hussain to four years of rigorous imprisonment.
A protector of emigrants (PoE) is responsible for granting emigration clearance to the intending emigrants as per the procedure prescribed under the Emigration Act.
The CBI arrested Sekar and Anwar Hussain, a recruiting agent, for collecting bribe amounts in the form of 'speed money' from various recruiting agents for clearance of emigration certificates submitted by the agents. Hussain collected the money and handed it over to Sekar and other public servants.
During investigation, it was found that Sekar had handed over ₹13 lakh to another person for arranging an engineering admission of his son. The money was also retrieved.
The CBI filed the chargesheet against the accused, and the special court for CBI cases in Chennai found both guilty.
