Kadhir Anand, who is also the party’s candidate for Vellore constituency, on Monday approached the Madras high court alleging that the income tax department was conducting raids at their residences and other places to prevent them from concentrating on the election campaign.

Advocate Richardson Wilson made the submission through an urgent mention before Justice Anita Sumanth and urged the court to take up the plea for hearing on an urgent basis. The plea wanted the court to restrain the department from proceeding with the raids and permit them to freely participate in election work. The petitioner also claimed that the Election Commission was biased against the petitioner and his father.

Assuring counsel that she would take up the issue for hearing on Tuesday, the judge asked counsel to file a formal petition. Acting on a tip, the I-T department has been conducting searches on premises belonging to Duraimurugan and Anand since March 30. Officials are yet to disclose the details of seizures.
