CHENNAI: Senior
DMK leaders S
Durai Murugan and
T R Baalu
have become the party's new
general secretary
and
treasurer
. Both the leaders were announced elected unopposed at the party's general council meeting -- held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic -- on Wednesday.
The election of Durai Murugan, who was the party's treasurer until last week, and Baalu was a foregone conclusion after nominations were received only from these two leaders for the two posts respectively last Thursday. Baalu is also the DMK parliamentary party leader.
The DMK general council approved the appointment of senior party leaders K Ponmudi and A Raja as deputy general secretaries of the party.
In his acceptance speech, after becoming DMK general secretary, S Durai Murugan assured party president
M K Stalin that he and his family members would remain loyal soldiers of the party for ever.
Baalu said he would work 24x7 for strengthening the party. DMK workers could reach him anytime on his mobile, he said.
The general council passed 14 resolutions, including one opposing the National Education Policy and another urging education to be brought back to the states list.
