CHENNAI: Puzhal prison authorities have confined the four men suspected of murdering neurosurgeon S D Subbiah in isolation in the remand prisoners’ block.
Prison warders said the suspects were not allowed to mingle with the other prisoners as they do not want them to hatch a plot to take revenge against Subbiah’s family.
Subbiah was attacked by three men near Billroth Hospital in Raja Annamalaipuram on September 14, 2013 and died in a hospital on September 23.
The Abiramapuram police solved the case and arrested four men — Dr James Satish Kumar and the henchmen he hired, Murugan, Selva Prakash and Iyyappan — on January 29.
Police said the motive for the murder was to get possession of 2.25 acres of property the doctor had inherited. The prime accused Ponnusamy, a former school teacher, his wife Mary Pushpam, his sons P Basil, a lawyer, and P Boris were arrested immediately after Subbiah’s murder and later granted conditional bail by the Madras high court.
As there is a possibility that they could plan another attack, Satish Kumar and the three hired killers have been isolated. “If we allow them to mingle with other criminals, they may devise fresh plans and hire prisoners who are set to be released to execute them,” a prison officer said. Prison authorities said the suspects are in separate cells in isolation.
