CHENNAI: Six persons, including a DMK activist and a BSP worker, were arrested on Monday for an incident in Vepery on June 17 where Rs 50 lakh was snatched from a metal company employee by persons posing as policemen. "The case was cracked after one of the accused, who turned honest, surrendered," a police officer said. About Rs 40 lakh was recovered from the accused and a hunt launched for four others.
The arrested were identified as Ward 79 DMK deputy secretary N Kudiyarasu alias Kumaravel (34), BSP youth wing official M Shakthivel (37), M Sathya alias Soosai Sandiago (37), M Madhan (34) R Kannan (38) and M Jayakumar alias Nagesh (33).
While Shakthivel surrendered, the other five were nabbed while trying to snatch a gold chain from Mani in Purasawalkam. Kudiyarasu and Shakthivel were the brains behind the robbery, the police said.
According to the police, Kannan on June 17 overheard Kamal Raj, a metal company employee, being told to bring Rs 50 lakh from the house of his employer Rathan R Jain on Flowers Road in Kilpauk. The accused followed Kamal Raj from Kilpauk, intercepted him near Vepery. Posing as policemen, they took the cash from him, asked him to come to the city police commissioner's office to collect it and sped away.
