Dhanush adds weightlifting gold to Tamil Nadu’s tally

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s L Dhanush bagged the gold medal in boys 55kg weightlifting (snatch and clean & jerk) by recording 225 kg in the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Friday. “This is my third gold medal at the KIYG. In the previous two editions (in Panchkula and Bhopal), I medalled in the 49kg. I recently upgraded my weight category to 55kg,” Dhanush told TOI.“My long-term aim is to win a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028,” added Dhanush. With this solitary gold medal, TN continued to hold on to the second spot with 26 gold, as against Maharashtra’s 28. Haryana is stationed in the third spot with 21 yellow metals.In girls 45kg category, Megha Aher from Maharashtra created a new youth national record in clean and jerk, recording 85kg, to clinch gold. Odisha’s Jyoshna Sabar created a new youth NR in snatch in 40kg category to win the yellow metal.TN clinch silver in mixed trap: Nilaa Raajaa Baalu and Yugan SM from TN combined to win silver after scoring 125 in the mixed trap shooting event. Aishwari Choudhary and Vinay Pratap Singh of Rajasthan bagged gold with 127 points.TN boys, girls volleyball teams through to semis: The TN boys and girls volleyball teams sailed into the semifinals after maintaining unbeaten streaks in the respective groups. On Friday, the boys team beat Rajasthan 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 in the final Group B match while the girls team got the better of Chhattisgarh 25-7, 25-6, 25-8 in Group A.
