CHENNAI: A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, which lay 800km south-southeast of Chennai on Tuesday morning, is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday (Nov 27) and move towards the Tamil Nadu coast. If the system becomes a cyclone, it will be called Fengal (pronounced Feinjal), a name given by Saudi Arabia.

The IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall of above 20cm in 24 hours at one or two places in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts and Karaikal on Nov 27.

Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengelpet, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Pudukottai districts and Puducherry have been issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall of 12-20cm in 24 hours at isolated places on Nov 27.

A yellow alert for heavy rainfall of 6 to 12cm in 24 hours has been issued to Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Trichy, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts on Nov 27.

On Nov 28, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengelpet and Villupuram were issued orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts and Puducherry have been issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall.



On Nov 29, Chennai, its three neighbouring districts and Ranipet may continue to get heavy spells at isolated places. The spells may continue to be heavy in isolated places in Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Kancheepuram districts on Nov 30.
