CHENNAI: A day after cyclone Vardah disrupted power supply in Chennai and nearby districts,

Tangedco

employees were busy on Tuesday repairing the damaged transformers and other installations.

Power supply was restored in some areas. However, it would take at least 24 more hours to restore power supply in some areas where transformers were damaged badly by fallen trees, said a senior official of Tangedco (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) on Tuesday.

"In many areas big trees fell on the transformer and the pillar boxes. With the help of corporation workers, we are removing the trees and then checking the damage," the official told TOI.

Tangedco has restored power in 33Kv low tension lines in areas like KK Nagar where there is no major damage to the transformer or pillar box. "In some areas only small trees fell on the transformers and pillar boxes. Our workers have removed them, and after checking the transformers and junction boxes for any short circuit, power was restored," he said.

In most of the areas, Tangedco replaced pillar boxes and transformers as big trees had fallen on them. "In several areas, transformer and pillar boxes were completely damaged. In these areas, transformers have to be replaced and we need more people on the spot," he said.

Tangedco was assessing the damage to its installations and workers were being sent to all areas.
