Cyclone Michaung News Live: Residents grappled with stagnant water and power disruption in parts of Chennai and its suburbs on Wednesday, two days after Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc in the metropolis and neighbouring districts, even as civic agency personnel stepped up relief and rehabilitation efforts. The government said power was kept suspended in some areas as a preventive measure since the power cables were under water, while asserting all efforts were being taken to restore normalcy. Another day's holiday was declared for schools and colleges in Chennai on December 7. The cyclone-triggered heavy rainfall had led to inundation in localities including Velachery and Tambaram. On Wednesday too, people were seen leaving their homes in the areas surrounded with water to safer zones, carrying their children and wading through the stagnant water. Securing her maiden Under-11 National Ranking title in Vijayawada brought joy and pain in equal measure for young Bengal paddler Sreosree Chakraborty, who is now stuck along with 300 others because of Cyclone Michaung, which has wreaked havoc on India's east coast. Cyclone Michaung made landfall in Bapatla, a coastal district of Andhra Pradesh, bringing heavy rainfall in Vijayawada, about 80km away, where the National Ranking TT tournament concluded on Monday. A Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) official told PTI on Tuesday that there are about 200 players in the age group of U-11 to U-19 stuck along with their family members.

Michaung crosses Andhra Pradesh coast, to weaken into cyclonic storm

Severe cyclonic storm Michaung crossed south Andhra Pradesh coast close to Bapatla district between 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm on Tuesday with maximum gales of up to 90 – 100 km per hour speed, said an Amaravati Meteorological Centre official. The weather system is likely to move northwards and weaken into a cyclonic storm in the next two hours, said the official. The weather system over west-central Bay of Bengal, running near south Andhra Pradesh coast moved northwards at a speed of 11 km per hour in the past six hours and crossed Andhra Pradesh coast between 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm, according to a press release.

Cyclone Michaung News: DMK MP Kanimozhi says, "In the last 2 days, we had more than 33 centimetres of rainfall which is much more than what we had in 2015, but because the govt was prepared and many people have been evacuated and moved to shelters. Around 411 shelters have been already prepared...Water has also been pumped out of most of the areas and power has also been restored in more than 60-70 per cent of the houses..."

Cyclone Michaung in Andhra Pradesh: Over 50 flights, 100 trains cancelled

Cyclone Michaung disrupted many flight and train services across Andhra Pradesh and the neighboring Tamil Nadu. Almost all services from Vizag, Tirupati, and Vijayawada airports were stalled due to heavy winds and downpours due to the effect of the cyclone for the second day. Cyclone Michaung News: Health officials brace for cyclone impact

The government has asked health department officials to stock the required medicines and admit pregnant women, who are due for delivery this week, in nearby hospitals. Health and family welfare commissioner J Nivas also directed district officials to make anti-venom injections for snakebites available at all primary healthcare centres in the state. “Health camps should be planned in all affected areas. Medical personnel and staff should be available to the public in their designated places. They should communicate the ground level situation to the state office. Monitoring of water quality is important to prevent water bornediseases,” said Nivas in an official communique.

All the five major dams in Tirumala reached their full capacity with the incessant rains. Papavinasanam, Akasaganga, Gogarbham, Kumaradhara and Pasupudhara are the chief water sources in Tirumala. Water is also drawn from Kalyani Dam in Tirupati. The water level in all the five dams reached full capacity. The water levels in all the dams will suffice the drinking water needs for the next 214 days.
