TRICHY: Saddened by the loss of his coconut trees in cyclone Gaja, a 60-year old farmer in

Thanjavur

district of Tamil Nadu allegedly committed

suicide

by consuming pesticide.

The deceased has been identified as Sundarraj of Cholahankudikadu village near Orathanadu. Sources said he had gown around 400 coconut trees on a five-acre land.

Cyclone Gaja that made landfall between near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district on November 16 damaged several lakhs of coconut trees in the delta districts.

Sundarraj was upset after the cyclone devastated his coconut farm.

On Thursday morning, his relatives found Sundarraj lying near a graveyard on the outskirts of the village.

He was rushed to Government Hospital in Orathanadu where he was declared brought dead.

registered a case and began investigations.

This is the second cyclone-related suicide in the state. Earlier, a banana farmer, identified as N Selvaraj Melakondayampettai in Trichy district, ended his life by jumping in front of a moving train at Srirangam, as the cyclone destroyed his banana plants on a two-acre lease land.
