KARAIKAL: Severe cyclonic storm Gaja, which made landfall near Nagapattinam on Friday morning, left several deer, horses, and wild boars in Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary and nearby headland regions dead.
The carcasses of some of the animals were washed ashore on Karaikal coast on Saturday.
Forest officials said the animals might have been killed in freak accidents under the influence of Gaja.
Incessant rain coupled with strong winds and flooding swept the animals from the sanctuary and nearby regions.
Their carcasses were washed ashore at various parts of Karaikal coast.
An official said carcasses of 25 deer, a few wild boars, two horses and eight wild birds were washed ashore at Pattinecherry, Karukalancherry and Karaikalmedu and other coastal hamlets along Karaikal district.
Forest officials and a team of veterinarians recovered the carcasses of the animals and buried them on the shores.
