On Wednesday, a division bench comprising Justices C Nagappan and P R Shivakumar directed CBI deputy inspector general S Sengathir, who was present in the court, to monitor the probe and file areport. Counsel for petitioner S Prabhakaran submitted that the crime could have been committed by a group, and some IPS officers were trying to protect them.
Special public prosecutor for CBI N Chandrasekaran said the agency was probing the matter from various angles.Under the supervision of the DIG, a CBI team were working on the case. “We understand the sentiments of the advocates and are aware of the views of the court. The moment we are in a position to crack the case, we will report it to the court,” said Chandrasekharan.
Before adjourning the matter, Justice PR Shivakumar said, “Let them (the CBI) show a breakthrough at the earliest. We are not going to treat a case involving an advocate as a different one. The common man does have equal right. Our anguish is that if the plight of the advocate is like this, then what is the state of the common man?” Turning to the CBI officer, he added, “You must bestow your attention on the case and solve it at the earliest.Hereafter, you are in charge.”
