Chennai: Police have arrested three people, including a juvenile, for the murder of a 25-year-old CPM worker near Pallavan House on Tuesday night.
The arrested men — M Rakesh, 20, E Dayanidhi, 26, and a 17-year old boy — did Triplicane resident D Mukilan to death following an argument, police said.
A probe revealed that the three accused attacked Mukilan's elder brother Silambarasan after a quarrel on Tuesday evening. Later that night, Silambarasan complained to his younger brother. Mukilan, his brother and a friend, Narasimhan, then went to confront the three men and found them drinking.
Mukilan questioned Rakesh, Dayanidhi and Velu who turned upon Mukilan and the two others, beating them with sticks and hurling stones at them. They retaliated but Mukilan suffered severe injuries and was taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he died.
Based on a complaint from Silambarasan, the Triplicane police registered a case under IPC Section 302 (murder) and arrested Rakesh, Dayanidhi and Velu. A court sent them to prison.
Mukilan worked in a medical store in Triplicane and was an active member of the CPM. After his death, CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan in a statement condemned the murder and conveyed deep condolences to Mukilan's family members.
