CHENNAI: Residents who have been lamenting about potholed roads on social media for nearly three months have something to cheer about now. Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to relay 61 roads based on their complaints. GCC has compiled a 62-page report with photos of bad roads posted on X (formerly Twitter) since June.

City corporation commissioner Dr J Radhakrishnan said the chief minister wanted to ensure that social media complaints are attended to. “GCC is taking social media posts into account, and providing a solution will also encourage people to bring more issues out,” he said. “Most complaints are from added areas such as Madiappakkam, Mugalivakkam,” he said. Some roads identified by GCC include Duraisamy subway in T Nagar, Madhavaram main road near the petrol station, Venkatesapuram Colony road in Ayanavaram, Sabari Nagar road in Mugalivakkam, Erikarai Street in Porur, and Valliammal Road in Purasawalkam. “These roads will be relaid in the coming months,” he said.

Municipal administration minister K N Nehru said even if bituminous roads could not be relaid due to monsoon, the corporation would put wet mix macadam on these roads. He said he instructed the highways department to speed up road work at Mugalivakkam and Manapakkam. Metrowater too must finish work on ECR so that it can be re-laid.

He said the corporation has to connect missing links in stormwater drain. “Pits dug up for civic work will be completed and closed, while new pits won’t be dug up till monsoon,” he said.
