Chennai: In a scene straight out of a film climax, a city police team barged into a wedding hall at Periyapalayam on Saturday and stopped a marriage at the eleventh hour before arresting the groom on a complaint from his live-in partner. The marriage was called off after the incident. The groom was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
Police said Yogeshwaran, 33, a resident of Thumbakkam village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district who owns a car repair workshop in Thirumullaivoyal, had been in a relationship with a woman in Ennore since 2016. His family, however, opposed his proposal as the woman, a teacher, was six years older than him.
While the two were living together, Yogeshwaran's parents arranged his marriage with another woman, and informed him that it would be held at a hall in Periyapalayam. Yogeshwaran agreed and snapped his relationship with the complainant.
On learning about the marriage arrangements, she lodged a complaint with the Ponneri all-women police station. A police team, accompanied by the complainant, stormed into the marriage hall on Saturday and detained Yogeshwaran for questioning. While the bride's family called off the marriage, Yogeshwaran was arrested for cheating the complainant and for having sexually assaulted her on several occasions.
