Chennai: A police sub-inspector, who was spotted riding a two-wheeler without a helmet, was on Friday placed under suspension. This is the first case of police personnel being suspended for violating the helmet rule.
Sub-inspector S Madhan Kumar of Mambalam police station (law and order wing) was suspended ‘for dereliction of duty by riding motor cycle without wearing helmet at South Usman Road, T Nagar at 9.10 am on Friday by violating a High Court order and also a circular issued by the DGP’, according to the suspension order issued by C Mageshwari, joint commissioner of police, South Zone.
Madhan Kumar attended the roll call at the police station around 7 am and later left for patrol on his official bike (TN 01G 5375) without wearing the headgear, mandatory for all two-wheeler riders.
Sources said the photograph of Madhan Kumar riding the bike without helmet was received on the GCTP citizen services app and subsequently the action was initiated. The SI should remain in the city and should leave the headquarters only after getting permission from the authority concerned, the order said.
