Cop held after woman run over by police patrol vehicle in Chennai

CHENNAI: A head constable named Vijayakumar was arrested on Friday for recklessly driving a police patrol vehicle and killing a woman milk vendor at Zam Bazaar in Chennai.
K Vimala, 40, who was walking on the roadside on the Bharathi Salai with milk sachets, died on the spot when a police vehicle bearing the registration number TN 01-G-5826 ran over her.The Anna Square traffic investigation wing police personnel rushed to the spot. The woman’s body was sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for postmortem.
Police registered a case under Section 304 (a) (death caused due to negligent driving) and arrested Vijayakumar, 38, for negligent driving.
During questioning, Vijayakumar told the police that he had swerved the vehicle to the extreme left to avoid it hitting a cow on the road. But the vehicle ran over the woman walking on the roadside.
He was remanded in judicial custody.
