CHENNAI: A police constable driving a car hit a bike injuring a pregnant woman in Adyar on Friday night. When a police constable intercepted the vehicle, the occupant attacked him and fled in another car.
The policeman suffered fracture on his leg. Initial inquiries identified the occupant of the car as Chandrakanth, a constable at the city police control room. Meanwhile, they received information that Chandrakanth appeared before the police at the Adyar police station.
Police said neither the pregnant woman nor the injured policeman lodged any police complaint. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Jasmine Fathima, 27, was riding pillion on her husband’s bike from Santhome to Adyar when a speeding car hit the bike from behind on Thiru Vi Ka Bridge on Friday night. The woman fell on to the road and sustained injuries on her leg.
Fathima’s husband and other road users chased the car and informed police personnel on duty on Lattice Bridge Road.
They intercepted the car and stopped Chandrakanth who didn’t reveal his identity as a cop. While police personnel were inquiring him, he tried to get into another car that appeared in the scene.
On seeing him getting into the car, constable Stalin Jose tried to stop the car. Chandrakanth pushed the constable down on to the road and sped away. Jose suffered bruises on his hands.
Later, police personnel traced the man and identified him as a police constable. Chandrakanth informed police officers at Adyar police station that he accompanied his family in a separate car to some place. His family was in another vehicle that tried to rescue him.
