Conmen create fake Facebook profiles of IPS officers

Chennai: After a hiatus, social media fraudsters who misuse IPS officers’ names and swindle money have resurfaced. This time they targeted chief minister's personal security officer R Thirunavukkarasu and Narcotics Control Bureau’s Chennai zone director P Aravindhan, but no loss of money has been reported. In both cases, conmen resorted to the same modus operandi. They created fake Facebook profiles of the officers and befriended people on their friends' list. They messaged them claiming that a transferredCRPF officer wanted to sell their furniture. They shared a phone number for interested buyers to contact. DIG Thirunavukkarasu, lodged a complaint. NCB director Aravindhan has reported the fake profile to Meta, as it was not the first time fake profiles were created in his name. tnn
