CHENNAI: Congress, which contested 41 seats in Tamil Nadu in alliance with the DMK, was leading in just nine seats on Thursday. Among them were sitting MLAs J G Prince in Colachel and S Vijayadharani in Vilavancode.

Congress candidates were also ahead in Karaikudi, Killiyoor, Sholingur, Sriperumbudur, Tenkasi, Thirumangalam and Udhagamandalam.

Senior leader P Chidambaram's protégé Karate Thiagarajan was trailing in third place in Mylapore in Chennai.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Union territory of Puducherry the Congress-DMK is likely to get a simple majority (16 seats) in the 30-member assembly.

The results of 25 of the total 30 constituencies have been declared. Congress has bagged 12 seats followed by AINRC eight and AIADMK four. Congress’s alliance partner DMK has bagged one seat while an independent candidate backed by CPM has bagged the Mahe assembly constituency.
