CHENNAI: Three of the city’s top golus from this Navaratri will be felicitated on
October 19
, as part of the The Times of India’s
Chance-ey Illa Golu Contest
. The contest, in its sixth edition this year, began when the Navaratri season kicked off on September 29 and the newspaper’s office in
T Nagar
received more than 1,000 entries from across the city.
Several golu arrangements featured dolls themed on various topics including the once-in-40-years Athi Varadar festival at the Devarajaperumal temple in Kancheepuram, Isro’s Chandrayaan mission and water conservation, all of them the top trending topics this year.
Of these, 30 were shortlisted by The Times of India and finally nine golus were selected after multiple screenings and visits by TOI’s celebrity judges Uma Iyer, Aishwarya Krish and Haritha Badava Gopi.
The top three winners will get gift vouchers worth Rs 1.8 lakh. They will be felicitated at the culmination of the Navaratri celebrations on October 19, where dancers Rukmini Vijayakumar, Vidha Lal and Yamini Reddy, and Carnatic musician S Sowmya are set to wow the audience.
“At a time when many traditions are being lost, an initiative like this is motivating. For the golu at our own dance school, my students and I brought dolls from our homes, and this helped them understand the symbolism of the festival,” says Rukmini Vijayakumar.
