Coimbatore police arrest two for cheating women of Rs 6 lakh
COIMBATORE: The Kattoor police in Coimbatore city arrested a Chennai-based woman and her accomplice for cheating two women of Rs 6 lakh.
K Sundarai, 35, of Mylapore in Chennai was selling flowers on the platforms near her residence. She befriended Hemavathy, 42, of Ramakrishnapuram near Mylapore more than a decade ago. Hemavathy was a private financier. She used to borrow money from Sundari and circulated it to others with high interest rates. She used to return the borrowed money with interest to Sundarai.
In April 2023, Hemavathy told Sundarai that she needed Rs 6 lakh in cash immediately and she would be ready to give 3% interest for every Rs 100 and would return the capital amount within two months. Believing her words, Sundari pledged her 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments in a private finance firm for Rs 3.5 lakh and handed over the amount to Hemavathy. She also received Rs 2.5 lakh from Pushpa of Mylapore and handed it over to Hemavathy.
But Hemavathy did not pay the interest amount for Rs 6 lakh. When Sundari asked her to pay either interest or the capital amount, Hemavathy replied to her that her accomplice, Ayyappan, 41, of Tirupur, had gone to Tirupati. She asked Sundari to visit Tirupati to get the amount. Sundari visited Tirupati where she met Hemavathy.
Hemavathy and Ayyappan showed euro currency notes to Sundari and told her that they could make fake euro notes and she could exchange them for higher rates. However, Sundari refused to receive the fake currency notes and demanded that they return her Rs 6 lakh.
Ayyappan told Sundari that a man named Dhamu would give her the amount at Thiruvalluvar bus stand in Coimbatore. Sundari visited the bus stand where she waited for a while. But she did not get any response from Dhamu, and she came to know that she was cheated.
Based on Sundari’s complaint, Kattoor investigation wing police inspector Prabhudoss registered a case and arrested Hemavathy and Ayyappan on Thursday. The police seized six fake black colour currency notes from them. Dhamu was absconding, police said.
Ayyappan told the police that he had cheated people by showing the black colour papers which would be turned into euro currency notes after dipping in a solution.
