CM announces 560cr crop damage relief to 6L farmers

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday announced compensation of 560 crore to six lakh farmers affected by natural disasters like drought, flood, cyclone and unseasonal rains under the crop insurance scheme during the last fiscal year. The crop insurance scheme is implemented in 14 clusters comprising 37 districts by identified insurance companies. “An area of 24.45 lakh acres were insured by 11.2 lakh farmers cultivating long-term samba crop during the last fiscal. The state government shared a premium subsidy of 1,375 crore, and the Centre shared 824 crore, and the farmers 120 crore,” an official release said. The government recently issued an order releasing 181.4 crore as compensation to 1.87 lakh farmers as 3.52 lakh acres were affected by poor rainfall during the northeast monsoon in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi districts.

Farmers find it tough to get insurance for loss of crops

Farmers in Rajasthan are facing difficulties in seeking compensation for damaged crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna. Farmers have reported that helpline numbers are mostly unavailable and insurance companies hesitate to recognize the damage. The schemes' norms do not consider the farmers' benefits, providing coverage only for a portion of the crops. The state government has instructed insurance companies to assess the damage caused by recent rainfall to ensure farmers can receive compensation.

Plea in HC on PM crop insurance scheme

The Madras High Court has asked the central and state governments to respond to a plea demanding the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) crop insurance scheme in Tamil Nadu for the entire year. The petitioners argue that the non-implementation of the scheme has caused significant losses to farmers, and that the insurance coverage should be extended for the full year in order to achieve the objectives of the scheme. The court has sought a response from the authorities regarding this matter.
