CHENNAI: Priests often preach — and this is a message that has to be heard. KE Sreejit, chief priest of the Shastri Nagar Ayyapan temple in Adyar, has started a campaign against the use of plastic during the Sabarimala pilgrimage.
He and his friends — K Baskar, Krishna Kumar, T R Anantha Padmanabhan — are distributing pamphlets asking devotees to use butter paper and bio-degradable bags instead of plastic.

Crores of devotees throng the Sabarimala hill shrine during November to January, the pilgrimage season, each carrying an 'irumudi' — a bag with two compartments.
The front holds puja articles and offerings, while the second compartment contains personal belongings. Most of these items are wrapped in plastic bags. And after the pilgrimage, tonnes of plastic items are left behind on the hill.
