Chennai: AR Ilamparthi, a 13-year-old from Chennai, won gold in the U-14 World Youth chess championships at Mamaia, Romania on Friday evening. He scored 9.5 points from 11 rounds and sealed the title after defeating Filip Magold of Romania in the final round. The encounter lasted 34 moves. Ilamparthi registered 9 wins, 1 loss and a draw in the tournament. The strong show by the youngster, with an ELO rating of 2269, saw him ncrease his rating by 57 points.
Ilamparthi, class VIII student at Sree Sankara Bala Vidyalaya Golden Jubilee School in Chennai, had a smooth start to the tournament winning his first five matches and splitting points in the sixth.
However, the young gun hit a roadblock when he went down to Savva Vetokhin of Russia in the seventh round. Grandmaster Shyam Sundar, Ilamparthi’s coach, felt his ward showed tremendous resilience to put that reversal behind him.
“He may just be 13 but Ilamparthi showed great composure. The loss in the seventh round didn’t upset him as he came back to notch up wins in the next four games to eventually seal the title,” Shyam Sundar told TOI.
It was in 2017 when Ilamparthi first caught the attention of many, winning two gold medals (rapid and blitz) and a silver in classical format at the Asian Youth championship held at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Two years later, the young gun rose to become U-10 World No. 3. He had won silver in the Commonwealth championships in New Delhi in 2019.
