Cho Ramaswamy demise: Journalism has lost a powerful voice, Madras Reporters Guild says

CHENNAI: The

Madras Reporters Guild

(Chennai Nirupargal Sangam) has condoled the death of veteran journalist Cho S Ramaswamy.

Cho Ramaswamy, who was a political commentator, former Rajya Sabha member, theatre personality and editor of Thuglak magazine, died on Wednesday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 82.

A statement from the guild said the world of

journalism

“has lost a powerful voice which ceaselessly fought for freedom of the press.”

“Cho was known for fearless and incisive journalism through his writings in Tughlak magazine. His strength was a unique brand of satire through this magazine and his plays. Though, as an actor, he was generally noted for his comedy, some of his plays and films were quite thought-provoking,” the statement said.

“His political satire left politicians quaking,” it added.

Recalling his contribution as a nominated Rajya Sabha member, the statement from the guild added that in his later years, “he donned the political hat as well, trying to stitch together alliances, as if he had taken over that role from Rajaji.”
