Chidambaram 2.0

Chennai: Two Sundays ago, at a meeting on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, organised at the Kerala Samajam in Chennai, former Union minister Palaniappan Chidambaram was the keynote speaker. "I can speak in English or Tamil, whichever you prefer."

This was uncharacteristic of Chidambaram, for whom it was either his way or no way, as this writer witnessed in the summer of 2004. The campaign heat for the Lok Sabha election was at its peak in Sivaganga parliamentary constituency. When the convoy of Congress candidate Chidambaram stopped at a nondescript junction on Karaikudi-Thirumayam Road and he rose to speak from the van.
