CHENNAI: Southern Railway carried out a four-hour mock drill at Tondiarpet yard here in the early hours of Wednesday to assess and improve preparedness of different agencies to respond and carry out rescue and relief during an accident.

A train accident scene was staged by toppling condemned coaches and by arranging them one above the other.

Railway Protection Force (RPF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force (TNDRF) and fire and rescue services personnel carried out rescue operations in the early hours on Wednesday.

The personnel entered the coaches and removed the 'bodies' and also 'injured' passengers.

The medical wing of the railways deployed its doctors and nurses who attended to the 'injured' passengers.



Around 400 professionally trained personnel took part in the exercise.

A self-propelled accident relief train (SPART) with doctors, paramedical staff, rescue workers, engineers and emergency tools for extricating passengers from debris were also used.

The exercise was carried out to enhance disaster management skills and review disaster preparedness, relief & rescue operations and coordination among different agencies, said a press release.
