Chennai: Woman found murdered at Potheri

CHENNAI: The body of a woman, thought to be in the mid-30s, was found with the throat slit near

Potheri railway station

in

Maraimalai Nagar

on Tuesday morning.

A few people who noticed the body alerted government railway police and team from the Tambaram railway station arrived. After preliminary inquiries, the team informed the Maraimalai Nagar police as the body was not on railway premises.

The Maraimalai Nagar police sent the body to the government hospital in Chengalpet for autopsy.

The woman was wearing a full-sleeved black chudidhar top and green trousers with white dots. A tiffin box with half-eaten lunch was found, but there was no bag at the spot and no jewellery on the body except for a pair of anklets. A few blood stained leaves had accumulated near her body, indicating she could have been killed at the same spot, police said.

Police, who found a train ticket from Chennai to Katpadi bought on September 24 and a Chennai Beach-Tambaram ticket bought on September 25 on the body, suspect it was a murder for gain and are now looking into why she travelled up to Potheri while having a ticket to Tambaram. Police have called in a sniffer dog.

All nearby police stations have been informed and the woman’s photograph sent to the state crime records bureau and Chennai city crime records bureau.

In June 2016, S Swathi, a 24-year-old Infosys employee, was murdered at the Nungambakkam railway station and P Ramkumar, an engineer, was arrested for the killing a month later. He later committed suicide.
